Moonreads answers one kind of question well: what the moon was, is, or will be doing on a given date — and what people have traditionally done with that.

How the numbers are produced

Phase moments come from the standard astronomical series in Jean Meeus'sAstronomical Algorithms, with the correction between dynamical and universal time applied. We check our output against the US Naval Observatory: across sampled months in 2026 through 2030 the largest disagreement was under a minute.

Every time on this site is UTC and labelled as such. Moon phases are instants, so the local date can differ from ours by a day depending on where you are.

What we do not claim

Traditional meanings are presented as tradition. Where a popular belief has been studied and not supported — the full moon and sleep, moon phase compatibility as an ancient practice — we say so on the page rather than quietly leaving it out.
