The traditional theme is subtraction — deciding what does not come into the next cycle. It reads as the reverse of the first quarter, and the practical reading matches: this is when a commitment either gets renewed deliberately or ends by default.

It is the waning half Moon, seen about three weeks into the lunar month. The illuminated portion is about 50%, and the phase falls around day 21–22 of a synodic month: 29 days 12 hours 44 minutes from one new moon to the next. It rises around midnight, stands highest near dawn, and remains visible through the morning.
The name can be misleading if you hear “quarter” as a description of the visible disk. The Moon is half lit from our point of view, but it is in the final quarter of its cycle before returning to new moon. Compared with first quarter, the lighting comes from the opposite side, so the same lunar ground looks unfamiliar in a useful way.
What the sky is doing
The most reliable field mark is time of night. This phase rises near midnight, climbs while most people are asleep, and is high in the sky around dawn. After sunrise it can still be visible for hours, pale but distinct against a blue morning sky if the air is clear.
The terminator, the line between lunar day and lunar night, is again drawn across the face. Craters along that line look sharp because the Sun is low over the lunar surface and throws long shadows. The effect is similar to first quarter, but the light comes from the other direction, so rims, ridges, and plains are emphasized differently.
- Look after midnight for a darker sky and stronger contrast.
- Look near dawn if you want the Moon high and less blurred by horizon air.
- Scan the terminator first; the bright outer edge shows less relief.
- In binoculars or a telescope, expect the view to rotate or flip depending on the optics.

What changes physically
The physical illumination is about 50%, but outdoor brightness is not simply half of full moonlight. The lunar surface reflects unevenly, and the full Moon is especially bright because of the opposition effect, when shadows on the surface are hidden from our line of sight. At quarter phase, more texture is visible, but the landscape on Earth is much less flooded with light.
Tides also change in a measurable way. Around the quarter phases, the Sun and Moon appear roughly at right angles from Earth, so their tidal pulls partly offset each other. This produces neap tides, with a smaller difference between high and low water than near new moon or full moon.
The lunar phase does not give a complete tide forecast by itself. Harbors, bays, seabed shape, wind, barometric pressure, and river flow can change the practical result. The phase explains the broad rhythm; a local tide table explains whether your boat will float at a particular dock on a particular morning.
How cultures have marked the waning half
Across cultures, the Moon has often been counted more carefully than the Sun in ordinary life, but the half-lit waning phase has not always been given a single public ceremony. New moons and full moons are more obvious communal markers: one begins a month, the other lights the night. The waning half more often appears in calendars, timing rules, and working lore.
European and North American almanacs printed the quarter phases because they mattered for light, tides, and the order of the month. Some regional farming traditions associated the waning Moon with pruning, cutting, storing, or reducing. Those customs should be read as inherited practice, not as proof that crops obey a simple lunar rule in every soil and climate.
Indian lunisolar calendars often use tithi, a measure of the angular distance between Sun and Moon, rather than the Western quarter names. The waning eighth tithi, Krishna Ashtami, falls near the visible waning half, but observance follows the tithi system. Other lunar calendars, including Islamic, Jewish, Chinese, Hawaiian, and Māori systems, may emphasize crescents, named nights, or full-moon dates more strongly than this exact half-lit moment.

The measurable facts are the geometry and timing. The phase is 50% illuminated, occurs around day 21–22 of the lunar cycle, and belongs to a synodic month of 29 days 12 hours 44 minutes. Observing it in practice
This is one of the better phases for beginning lunar observation. Full moon is bright, but it often looks flat because the Sun shines almost straight onto the face we see. At the waning half, low-angle light makes shadows again, so craters and mountain chains stand out with more depth.
You do not need a large telescope. Binoculars show the contrast along the terminator, especially if you brace your elbows or rest the binoculars against a wall. A small telescope adds detail, but it may reverse the view, so use a current lunar map if you want to identify features by name.
- Choose a morning with clear, dry air if possible.
- Block the Sun with a roofline, tree, or building when observing after sunrise.
- Avoid judging the phase by left and right alone; orientation changes by hemisphere and instrument.
- Sketch the terminator on two mornings in a row to see how quickly the shadows move.
- Compare it with first quarter to notice how opposite lighting changes familiar craters.
Using the phase without overclaiming
As a practical marker, the phase is well placed for review. It comes after the fullness of the cycle but before the dark pause of the new moon. That makes it a natural date for sorting what has run its course, especially tasks that become invisible when they are merely left open.
The practice does not need a promise attached to it. A person can use the waning half to cancel an unused subscription, return a borrowed book, close a lingering project, or decide not to renew an obligation. The Moon supplies the clock; the decision remains human.
