Where it sits in the month
This phase begins just after full moon and runs toward last quarter, roughly from day 15 to day 21 of the lunar cycle. In our calculation, the visible disk is still more lit than dark: about 99% illumination at the start, falling to about 51% near the end. The whole synodic month, measured from one new moon to the next, is 29 days 12 hours 44 minutes, so this is the week when the month is past its peak but not yet in its final darkening.
That is why it is often confused with its neighbors. On the first night it can look almost full unless you compare the edge carefully; near the last night it can seem like a half moon, though it is still slightly more than half lit. The word waning describes the direction of change, not a mood: the illuminated portion visible from Earth is decreasing night by night.
What changes in the sky
The most useful sign is timing. A full moon rises around sunset, but this phase rises after sunset and later each night. By the middle of the phase, the moon belongs more to late evening and after midnight than to twilight. It is often still above the horizon after breakfast, the pale moon people notice in a blue morning sky.
- Look for it in the east after dark at the beginning of the phase; later in the week, wait until late evening or near midnight.
- In the morning, look west or southwest after sunrise, when the sky is bright but the moon can still be distinct.
- The lit side points generally toward the Sun, so after full moon the bright side faces eastward before dawn and the shadowed edge grows on the opposite side.
- Exact rise and set times depend on your location; phase times in good almanacs are usually given in UTC, then converted to local time.
Tides, light, and measurable change
Several physical things do change during these days, but not all in the same simple way. Moonlight decreases as illumination falls from nearly full to just over half, although perceived brightness is not perfectly proportional to the percentage on a calendar. The surface also looks less flat than at full moon because shadows return along the terminator, the boundary between lunar day and lunar night. Craters and ridges near that line become easier to see through binoculars.
Tides also shift after full moon. Around full and new moon, the Sun, Earth, and Moon are more closely aligned, producing spring tides with larger tidal range in many places. As the moon moves toward quarter phase, that range generally weakens toward neap tides, though coast shape, water depth, weather, and local resonance can matter more on a given beach. The phase is measurable; the exact tide you see is local.
How cultures marked these days
Many cultures did not give this shape a separate name equivalent to the modern English phase label. They marked it as the days after fullness, the decreasing half of the month, or a numbered lunar day. That distinction matters because traditional calendars were practical instruments: they set festivals, fasting days, market days, planting customs, and ritual observances by lunar date rather than by a photograph-like phase name.
In Indian lunisolar calendars, the fortnight after full moon is Krishna Paksha, the darkening half, divided into tithis rather than broad visual phases. In Chinese and other East Asian lunisolar traditions, the full moon around the fifteenth day is the obvious marker; the following nights are counted forward through the month as the moon rises later. In Islamic practice, the month is established by the crescent, not the gibbous moon, but a waning bright moon still shows that the month has passed its middle. European agricultural almanacs often spoke more generally of work done in the waning moon, though local rules varied widely and should be read as folklore, not astronomy.

Observing notes for the week after full
For naked-eye observing, this is one of the easiest phases because the moon is bright and present for many hours. The best time depends on what you want to see. If you want the whole disk, observe soon after moonrise when it clears buildings and trees. If you want surface detail, wait until the terminator has moved far enough across the face to throw stronger shadows.
Binoculars are often better than a telescope for casual viewing because the disk is still large, bright, and easy to hold in context. A telescope can show more detail, but the brightness may be uncomfortable without a lunar filter or higher magnification. Photographers should expect a much brighter object than the surrounding sky at night, and a much lower-contrast object after sunrise. In the blue morning sky, underexpose slightly if you want the lunar markings to remain visible.
