How the times are worked out

Every moment on this page is calculated, not copied: the phase times come from the lunar theory in Jean Meeus's Astronomical Algorithms, corrected for the difference between atomic time and Earth's rotation. Checked against the US Naval Observatory's published phases for 2025 to 2030, all 297 times match to the minute or differ by one.

The sign is worked out through the Sun: a new moon happens when the Moon and Sun share a longitude, a full moon when they stand 180° apart, so the Moon's position at that minute is the Sun's plus 0°, 90°, 180° or 270°. Signs are tropical, as in Western astrology. Eastern Time follows daylight saving, which is why spring and summer times read EDT and the rest EST.

A calendar gives the same sky to everyone. Where these new and full moons land in your own birth chart is the personal part, and that is what a reading built from your birth date looks at. See a reading built from your birth moon →

Questions

When is the first full moon of 2026?

The first full moon of 2026 is the Wolf Moon on Saturday, January 3, 2026, at 5:03 AM EST (10:03 UTC), with the Moon in Cancer.

How many full moons are there in 2026?

Thirteen, from January 3 to December 23. A lunar cycle lasts about 29.5 days, so a calendar year fits twelve full moons with roughly eleven days to spare; this year those days add up to a thirteenth.

Is there a blue moon in 2026?

Yes. May 2026 has two full moons, and the second, on Sunday, May 31, is a Blue Moon in the calendar-month sense. No season of the year holds four full moons, so there is no seasonal Blue Moon by the older rule either.

When is the Harvest Moon in 2026?

On Saturday, September 26, 2026, at 12:48 PM EDT. It is the full moon nearest the September equinox (September 22 this year, Eastern Time).

Which months of 2026 have two new moons?

None: every month of 2026 has exactly one new moon in Eastern Time, so there is no Black Moon this year.
